Securing Supply Chain For Full Traceability in the Nutrition Industry

Glanbia plc is a global nutrition group, employing over 6,000 people across 32 countries and revenues of €3.7bn (2016). Glanbia takes pure and clean ingredients including milk, whey and grains, and using expert knowledge and capabilities produces high-quality nutritional ingredients and branded consumer products for its customers and consumers worldwide. It has leading market positions in sports nutrition, cheese, dairy ingredients, speciality non-dairy ingredients and vitamin and mineral premixes. They have major production facilitieslocated in Ireland, the US, the UK, Germany and China.

A key pillar of Glanbia’s food traceability strategy is the need to guarantee a secure and reliable data feed throughout all stages of the supply chain from the sourcing of the raw nutritional materials, through to production and distribution and on to the eventual point of purchase. Integral to this strategy was the integration of state-of-the-art new metering technology to the dairy production supply chain.  The meters selected use a range of sensors to track both the quantity of milk and its characteristics, such as the percentage of cream, protein and lactose.  Asavie was tasked with developing a means by which this data could be collected at the farm and transmitted to Glanbia’s manufacturing executive systems.

“Asavie provided automated data gathering from our fleet of trucks in real time, giving us information faster…which, in turn, is fed immediately to our processing facilities, giving us time to adjust to varying supply patterns.”
