The Future of Work: How will Enterprise Network Security Change?

Mick Higgins

In most places around the world, restrictions on movement, businesses, and gatherings are being lifted in stages, some faster than others. I am writing this blog from my home in Ireland and we are in Phase 2+ of our opening. We are all looking forward to most businesses being opened by the end of June and getting our economy going again. On a personal note, I am looking forward to seeing my Dad again who I have not seen since February. So Happy Fathers’ day to my Dad and all the Dads around the world!

Office Anywhere, the ‘new normal’

On the work front, at the height of Covid-19 in March/April as businesses locked down and all workers became remote workers overnight, it put a spotlight on current remote access solutions and how inadequate these solutions are. As we move to re-opening our businesses there is a lot of discussion about a ‘new normal’ post COVID-19. There is talk, of how work will change and about the key enablers from collaboration tools, to new work policies, to ‘Office Anywhere’ solutions. The new reality is that businesses will encourage some employees back to the workplace, whilst opting for those employees that can to remain off-site. COVID-19 will have a lasting impact on work practices and how businesses interact with their customers and suppliers.

Security at the heart of work from anywhere

Technology and IT will play a key role in the ‘new normal’ for businesses to survive and thrive. While ‘essential’ sectors such as Education, Public services, and Healthcare have seen accelerated technology investments during the crisis. Other business sectors such as travel, retail, manufacturing, etc. which were largely shut down during the crisis will need technology transformation to adapt to the ‘new normal’ of work from anywhere. The technology transformation will also be needed to address changes in customer behaviors and how they view, purchase, and consume products and services.

Many of us have heard of the increased number of cyberattacks during the crisis. Asavie is a network-security SaaS company specializing in mobility and we saw at first-hand that attacks did not stop during the lockdown but increased. One of my colleagues wrote an excellent blog on the different attacks we were seeing a few weeks ago (Phishing Attacks are Evolving. Make Sure your Business is Ready By Colm Warner).

Future of Office Anywhere Network Security

The ‘new normal’ means businesses cannot come without a security-first approach. However, we have noticed that many of the new network security solutions being proposed to deal with ‘Office Anywhere’ are not sufficient and do not leverage the ubiquitous coverage and usability of cellular connections and smart devices effectively. We partnered with Clavem Research to explore the future of networking security solutions and how they stack up to deliver ‘Office Anywhere’ effective solutions to businesses. We looked at the various technology solutions from Software-defined WAN (SD-WAN), Cloud Access Security Broker (CASB), Zero Trust Network Access (ZTNA), and the Secure Access Service Edge (SASE), and how these solutions stack up to delivering the new requirements of remote work after COVID-19.
